About Me
I’m Amy Elizabeth, an oil painter based in London.
I’ve been painting for as long as I can remember, and now that I focus on oils I am particularly interested in capturing faces, though I do also paint still life.
The way that light interacts with the people and objects I paint can be uniquely explored using oils. I enjoy creating both depth and subtlety, whether catching a fleeting expression or distilling a rich range of emotion.
My work is currently particularly influenced by John Singer Sargent, particularly his confident brushwork, capturing life with a sense of immediacy. At the same time, my paintings are shaped by my own experience of living in London. I try to find inspiration in the city's contrast, and small, overlooked moments.
Alongside painting, I work in costume for theatre and television. My training as a costume-maker and tailor taught me about aesthetics and forced me to take an active approach to watching the world around me. I find myself dissecting the way visual details can tell or support a story, and try to filter these ideas into my work.
